This man would have been in his 30s in 1959 when the United States broke off relations with Cuba—maybe his hat is a comment on international relations. He is now a musician playing his instrument in the plaza, free for all to hear. Although there is only a faint smile on his lips, there is a wonderful light in his eyes. Detail from Cuban Guitar (see full quilt, page 102) The pattern of threads in the eye can be circular or radiating. Both applications are beautiful. The choice is yours. Detail from Las Mambesis (see full quilt, page 40) The very first thing you should stitch on a portrait quilt is the eye.
We’ll begin the sewing process by adding the rose tone to the girl’s cheek and lips. I almost always work from the darkest thread to the lightest. By starting with the rose tone, you can layer and blend the subsequent threads that will give a glow to her skin. I have purposely left space between the threads so that her cheeks have a suggestion of blush versus a totally red cheek. With practice you’ll train your eye to see subtle color differences and be more able to find threads that mimic the colors in your photographs.
Now you can begin to work on the rest of the face, adding texture and shadows where needed. T TIP In this example, I stitched only the pupil and not the iris. I liked the glint in the boy’s eye and thought it would look best unstitched. This is something you learn by trial and error. Highlights I always leave the glint of highlight (a white spot in the eye that is a reflection of light) in the eye unstitched. In the dog’s eye, the highlights are very soft. They almost match the luminescence in the white of the eye.
