Always a stranger would be asked to do it in. And we were forbidden to give the animal a name, just calling it “the pig” because giving it a name would give it a persona, making the necessary killing of it more difficult.

In the night in such cold conditions, the eye being just water really, the left eye frozen stiff. I knew it was froze when I got off the train. There was no pain at the time. But a head’s ache was developing, along with a throbbing in the eye. I knew this was serious. How much worse could it get? I knew from experience that a frozen foot or a frozen hand, left unattended, rots. Can a frozen eye rot, too? Well, as you can believe, it was becoming apparent to me that I should not have stolen a ride on the train.
