Chapter One 1. ” Vilna Gaon, Commentary to Mishlei, 4:13 I was in second grade. I remember it clearly. The Rebbe – I don’t remember much about him except that he had a beard – seemed relatively young and got upset very easily. If you didn’t keep your finger on the place he would yell, and he yelled a lot. If you slipped off the place more than once, he would throw chalk at you for that second infraction. Abuse consists of a variety of situations that impact peoples’ lives every day in painfully long-term ways. This is no less so in the Jewish world. We are told that Torah is transformative, and it is. According to the laws of the Torah we are admonished to not stand idly by when someone’s blood is being spilled. This admonition, of course, applies to violence and abuse as well. Yet, like all humans, we rationalize our reactions and much too often, we simply walk away. All people have their reasons for rationalizing.
According to some findings the single most significant predictor of someone becoming violent as an adult is exposure to abuse in the person’s family of origin. The rates for overall abuse, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2000, 2008), are that one in four women and one in nine men are subjected to abuse in the form of domestic violence. Unfortunately, only about 25 percent of women who were physically abused reported it, while men are even less likely to report the domestic violence they were exposed to, doing so at half that rate (Tjaden and Thoennes 2000).
